:: Beginners Ice Climbing

This course introduces basic ice climbing techniques, concepts, and developing the problem solving skills of an individual. Enables the student to gain an understanding of the general principles of ice climbing; how equipment works and how it is used; basic climbing skills and techniques; safety and climbing etiquette and terminology.

The course objectives are as follows:

  • Review climbing equipment
  • Employ basic principles of movement on ice such as hands, feet, and body techniques
  • Identify the types and uses of various ropes
  • Demonstrate various knots used in ice climbing and how to tie-on to rope
  • Recognize and practice the various types of belay techniques
  • Review and practice setting anchors
  • Practice climbing terminology

:: Intermediate Ice Climbing

This course builds on ice climbing I, focus is on advanced techniques, following a lead climber, lead climbing, improving dexterity, developing problem solving skills and advanced anchor systems. Enables the student to gain an understanding of the general principles of ice climbing as related to lead climbing; how equipment works and how it is used; safety and climbing etiquette and terminology.

The course objectives are as follows:

  • Review climbing equipment, quick draws, slings, ice pitons, ice screws, fi-fi hooks.
  • Employ basic principles of movement on ice such as hands, feet, and body techniques
  • Ice / belay rescues escaping the belay
  • Recognize and practice the various types of belay techniques Static/Dynamic
  • Setting up your climbing rack. Gear management.
  • Review and practice setting anchors equalized/ V thread
  • Practice climbing terminology Belay on- on belay
  • Describe and manage various rope systems Double vs. Twin vs. Single
