Rock Climbing

Beginners

This course introduces basic rock climbing techniques, improving dexterity, and developing the problem solving skills and physical work capacity of an individual. Enables the student to gain an understanding of the general principles of climbing; how equipment works and how it is used; basic climbing skills and techniques; safety and climbing etiquette and terminology.

The course objectives are as follows:

  • Review climbing equipment
  • Employ basic principles of movement on rock such as hands, finger, feet, and body techniques
  • Identify the types and uses of various ropes
  • Demonstrate various knots used in rock climbing and how to tie-on to rope
  • Recognize and practice the various types of belay techniques
  • Practice rappelling

Intermediate

This course introduces lead rock climbing techniques, improving dexterity, and developing the problem solving skills and physical work capacity of an individual. Enables the student to gain an understanding of the general principles of following, lead climbing; how equipment works and how it is used; advanced climbing skills and techniques; safety and climbing etiquette and terminology.

The course objectives are as follows:

  • Review climbing equipment
  • Employ principles of movement on rock such as hands, finger, feet, and body techniques
  • Identify the types and uses of rock protection
  • Recognize and practice the various types of belay techniques (static, dynamic)
  • Anchors-natural-man made
  • Following a lead climber
  • Lead climbing
  • Emergency procedures
